GREENSBORO– The Providence Panthers Rugby Football Club kept their undefeated season alive with a 55-5 victory over the Northwest Guilford Vikings.
“We got off to great start with Mayo’s try in the first couple minutes, but I feel we got too confident after that. It was a while before we scored our second try, but once we slowed things down and played the game to our advantages we started to see the scoreboard light up”, said Fly Half Hunter Meacham. “We put up a very good showing of what makes this team great today. Our coaching is second to none and it really showed. I’ve been very impressed at the progress of our rookies and I think we have a very talented group of guys this year. Im excited about what this team has in store for the rest of the season.”
In all, four Panther posted tries. Mayowa Ogunmola had an All-American day as he went on to score an astounding 5 times and made key contributions on defense. Corey Matthews, Glenn Tarry, and Luke Dugdale all contributed 1 try a piece as well. Hunter Meacham and Freshman Jack Whitney combined for 5 conversion kicks.
Providence came out blazing with Mayowa Ogunmola scoring on a great pass from Luke Dugdale within the first minute. Providence kept their tempo high and played the ball inside to the centers for most of the day with great success. Mayowa would go on to score two more times in the half to push their lead to 19-0 going into halftime.
The second hall also belonged to the Panthers as well as they went on a 36-5 run. Second year player Luke Dugdale set the tone on defense with a couple monster tackles and poaches as well as some great runs on offense, including a 60-yard score. Captain Glenn Tarry, Corey Matthews, John Kendrew, and Zack Helton all put up great numbers in defense as well. .
Providence Rugby will be back in action on Feb. 17th to take on the Hough Huskies at home.
